The Napper and the Nervous Driver: A Story About the Long-Term Investor Mindset

Two friends take the same mountain road to the same campsite — one naps, one white-knuckles every curve. A short story about why long-term investors arrive rested.

Two friends decide to drive up into the mountains for a camping trip. The guy in the passenger seat tells the driver he is going to take a nap and to wake him when they arrive. The driver agrees, and they start the climb.

The passenger leans his seat back, closes his eyes, and falls asleep. The driver stays alert, watching the side of the mountain carefully as they head higher. At first everything looks fine, but once they gain some elevation the road narrows and begins winding back and forth. Oncoming traffic forces him toward the edge. He grows more nervous with every turn. Higher still, the drop-off becomes steeper. He can see the valley far below, with trees, cars, and houses looking like tiny dots. On the other side of the road, massive boulders hang over the pavement. A landslide would be deadly. By the time they finally reach the campsite, the driver’s hands are shaking and his nerves are shot.
